Should You Use a Recruiter to Find a Teaching Job in China?

Should You Use a Recruiter to Find a Teaching Job in China? Okay then, let's talk about the recruiting process itself – those slick brochures promising you'll teach at a prestigious university in Shanghai for triple your salary, with benefits package so lavish it could fund multiple ski holidays. But have you ever looked beyond the glossy brochure and the carefully worded email? Because what they conveniently forget to mention is how quickly that "prestigious" becomes just... prestigious-sounding.

The flip side of those seemingly angelic recruiters often involves schools woefully underfunded or located miles away from any actual urban centres, leaving you reliant on questionable Wi-Fi hotspots. And honestly, if the recruitment process felt like something out of a negotiation tactic during wartime, then you're probably already in way too deep with your 60-hour-a-week schedule and contract terms that read suspiciously like legal documents drafted by accountants rather than educators.

Seriously though – when they ask for proof of qualifications on day one instead of three months later? Or if they promise airfare but it's only included once per year despite you planning to move every six weeks? I mean, who knew "recruiters" could be this... complicated?

And don't get too cocksure about that five-star school either. Sometimes the stars are just decorative paperweights on the wall of your new classroom.
