Why Europe's Dream of a Unified Scientific Market is Still a Struggle The EU Fights to Establish a Common Science Area

/>

Over the last few decades, the European Union has been striving to keep pace with the science and innovation powerhouses of the United States and Japan. The EU made the decision to create the European Research Area (ERA) with this goal in mind. The objective of this program was to establish a single scientific market to support the EU's Four Freedoms—unrestricted trade in products, services, money, and people.
Bringing together specialists from Eastern and Western Europe, encouraging open communication, and funding research in a way that reduced duplication were the ERA's three main goals.

/>The ERA was a noble goal, but it has been a difficult one to achieve.

As a scientist, I have seen firsthand the struggles Europe faces in building a common area for science.

Despite the efforts of the EU, progress has been slow. The main problem is a lack of money. It is troubling that each nation in Europe has its own system while research funding in the US is centralized.

Because of this, it is challenging to organize research and prevent duplication. And that's not the only challenge. Another issue we face is the lack of a universal language.

Communication and information exchange may be difficult because there are so many unique languages spoken throughout Europe. Despite English being the language of science, many European scientists lack fluency in it. This presents a unique set of challenges when attempting to collaborate and share research. Adding to the difficulty are cultural differences, with some countries approaching science in a more hierarchical manner. In contrast, the Netherlands promotes a more egalitarian approach, encouraging junior scientists to challenge their seniors. Ultimately, finding common ground and effective communication is key to successful scientific collaboration.
