I Wasn’t a Tourist—But They Treated Me Like a Exhibit

I Wasn’t a Tourist—But They Treated Me Like a Exhibit Walking into Shenzhen felt… different. You know what happens when you expect something specific, like thinking a place will be packed with neon signs and people constantly checking their phones? It’s usually an adjustment period. The first few hours were pure sensory overload; streets bustled like ant colonies, smells competed (the air conditioning couldn't quite beat the mix of exhaust fumes and street food), and finding your way felt like navigating a dense jungle rather than just walking down avenues.

But beyond that physical intensity, it was definitely something else. People move everywhere with purpose – rushing from work to lunch breaks before heading straight back into meetings or commencing evening projects? It seems everyone has somewhere urgent to be! My own pace felt sluggish compared to theirs; I stopped often for photos because *every* little shop seemed to offer souvenirs, and crossing the street became a surprisingly complex negotiation. Did anyone notice how long it took me? Probably not… unless they were also trying to cross simultaneously while holding conference calls on their phones.

The real kicker was the sheer density of people everywhere I turned. It felt less like exploring a city and more like observing from behind glass, you know? There’s this place in between flights where these huge shopping centres have those food courts – it’s packed! Packed! People jostling for space on benches narrower than doorways… honestly, the elbow grease required to just sit down was impressive. I kept checking if they were training me how to do that efficiently.

Then there's the language barrier itself; sometimes you feel like a broken record repeating the same phrases over and over trying to get by. But it’s more fun than standing in front of an audience reciting lines, maybe? It beats feeling completely lost or misunderstood any day!
