Rampant Cheating in Colleges: A Harrowing Reality That Affects Us All

Pamela Vallejos, a biochemistry major at the University of Hofstra, never expected to face the harsh reality of cheating during her freshman year. Amidst a group project, her lab partner brazenly claimed credit for her hard work in the laboratory report. "I had helped him with the introduction, but he ended up using all of it," recounts Vallejos, who aspires to attend medical school post-graduation in 2022.

Despite the fact that her partner's conclusion was ineffective, he still swiped all the glory for her diligent efforts. Vallejos took the matter up with her professor, but instead of being taken seriously, she was met with derisive laughter - a harrowing experience indeed. She thought that the history of the Google documents would rectify the injustice, but it did not. Her name was not included as an introductory author, and her teacher did not act on her complaint.

Vallejos, rather than dwelling on the vexation, delved into backing the University's Honor Code. This declaration was embraced by both pupils and staff and aims to foster academic honesty.

As a student myself, I have personally witnessed the all-too-common occurrence of cheating. It's not merely a handful of miscreants, it's a rampant problem that affects us all. It's dispiriting to observe your cohorts taking shortcuts and sabotaging the diligent exertion of others.

The statistics from the International Center for Academic Integrity are staggering - 80% of students admit to cheating at least once.

That means that the majority of students are willing to cheat to get ahead. Cheating isn't just a problem for individual students. It affects the entire academic community, from professors to fellow classmates. It creates an environment of mistrust and undermines the integrity of the entire educational system.

Taking a stand against cheating and prioritizing honesty and integrity in our academic pursuits is a responsibility that falls on all of us. After all, as the age-old saying goes, "honesty is the best policy" - especially in education.

To combat cheating, colleges and universities have implemented various policies like honor codes, academic integrity committees, and plagiarism checkers. While their effectiveness may vary, their goal is the same: to encourage ethical behavior and prevent cheating. Additionally, educational institutions can also educate students about the consequences of cheating and the importance of academic honesty.

Online learning has presented new challenges in preventing cheating, but schools are adapting with measures like remote proctoring, plagiarism detection software, and secure online testing. However, these measures also raise legitimate concerns about privacy, accessibility, and equity.

Companies like Find Work Abroad and Teaching China can make a significant impact on promoting academic honesty by providing qualified and ethical teachers to schools and universities worldwide.
